★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

Our XR3 tire sets the standard for cross-country and trail performance. The aggressive tread pattern features tall, widely spaced knobs that dig into loose terrain while clearing mud efficiently, giving you confident traction on technical climbs and descents.

We designed the XR3 with a fast-rolling center tread that maintains speed on hardpack sections, while the robust side knobs provide cornering security when you're pushing through turns. Whether you're racing cross-country or exploring new trails on the weekend, this tire adapts to changing conditions without compromise.

Available in multiple sizes and casing options, the bontrager xr3 works with both tubeless-ready and traditional tube setups. Our proprietary rubber compound balances durability with grip, so you get consistent performance mile after mile without excessive wear.

Tread Design & Performance Characteristics

The bontrager xr3 features our most aggressive tread pattern for riders who demand maximum traction. Tall, widely spaced knobs dig into soft soil and shed mud instantly, preventing the tire from packing up on wet trails.

The center tread uses shorter ramped knobs arranged in a tight pattern that rolls fast on hardpack while still providing braking traction. We transitioned the side knobs to a more aggressive profile that bites hard when you lean the bike into corners.

Sizing & Compatibility Guide

Sizing & Compatibility Guide

We offer the XR3 in two popular sizes to fit modern mountain bikes. The 29×2.20 option works perfectly on cross-country race bikes and trail bikes with moderate tire clearance, providing aggressive traction in a relatively lightweight package.

The 27.5×2.35 size delivers even more grip and cushion for aggressive trail riding and enduro applications. This wider profile increases the contact patch for improved cornering security on loose terrain.

Compound Technology & Durability

Our dual-compound rubber construction places a harder compound in the center tread for longevity and rolling efficiency, while softer rubber on the side knobs delivers superior cornering grip. This strategic design extends tire life without sacrificing performance when you need it most.

The 60 TPI (threads per inch) casing strikes an ideal balance between suppleness and puncture protection. A higher thread count creates a more flexible tire that conforms to trail irregularities for better traction and comfort, while still providing robust protection against thorns and sharp rocks.

Perfect tire for mixed terrain riding
I've been running the XR3 for six months on my trail bike and it handles everything from hardpack to loose rock with confidence. The cornering grip is outstanding, and I've had zero flats running tubeless. Highly recommend for aggressive XC and trail riding.

Best all-around tire I've used
These tires transformed my bike's handling on technical climbs. The knobs dig into loose soil and roots without feeling sluggish on smoother sections. Installation was easy, and they've been holding air perfectly for three months.

Great traction, reasonable weight
I was worried the aggressive tread would slow me down, but the XR3 rolls surprisingly fast while still providing the grip I need on descents. They're a bit heavier than pure XC race tires but worth it for the added confidence.

Excellent mud-clearing performance
We've had a wet spring and these tires have been amazing in muddy conditions. The wide knob spacing prevents packing, and I can still pedal efficiently when things get sloppy. Best tire investment I've made this year.

Durability exceeded expectations
I've put over 800 miles on my first set and the tread still looks strong. The side knobs show minimal wear even though I ride aggressive trails three times a week. The tubeless setup has been completely reliable with no burping or air loss.

Solid choice for front tire especially
I run the XR3 up front paired with an XR2 in the rear, and this combination is perfect for my local trails. The front tire provides steering confidence while the rear rolls fast. Installation was straightforward with a standard floor pump.

Good to know

Common Questions About the XR3 Tire

The XR3 excels in cross-country racing, trail riding, and any situation where you need aggressive traction without excessive weight. It handles loose terrain, roots, and rocks exceptionally well while still rolling efficiently on hardpack sections.

Many riders choose the XR3 as a front tire paired with a faster-rolling rear, though it works great front and back if maximum traction is your priority. The tire performs best on natural singletrack rather than pure hardpack or extremely rocky terrain.

Yes, the XR3 works perfectly with standard inner tubes if you prefer traditional setup. Use tubes rated for the tire size you're installing — 29-inch tubes for the 29×2.20 size, or 27.5-inch tubes for the 27.5×2.35 version.

While tubeless offers benefits like lower weight and fewer pinch flats, tube setup is completely reliable and requires no special equipment beyond tire levers and a floor pump. Many riders start with tubes and convert to tubeless later.

Check and refresh tubeless sealant every 2-3 months for optimal performance. Sealant dries out over time, especially in hot climates or if you ride infrequently. Remove the valve core and add 1-2 oz of fresh sealant to maintain puncture protection.

If you notice the tire losing air pressure overnight or sealant no longer sealing small punctures effectively, it's time to refresh. Complete sealant replacement (removing old dried sealant) should happen once or twice per year depending on riding frequency.

Most riders find 24-28 PSI ideal for trail riding with tubeless setup, adjusted based on weight and terrain. Start at 25 PSI and reduce by 1-2 PSI if you want more traction and comfort, or increase pressure if you're experiencing tire squirm in corners.

Heavier riders (over 200 lbs) typically need 28-30 PSI to prevent rim strikes on technical trails. Lighter riders (under 160 lbs) can run as low as 22 PSI for maximum grip. Always stay within the 50 PSI maximum printed on the tire sidewall.

The XR3 works with any tubeless-ready rim that has an internal width between 23-30mm. We recommend 25-28mm internal width for optimal tire profile and performance. Check your rim manufacturer's specifications to confirm tubeless compatibility.

You'll also need tubeless rim tape, tubeless valves, and sealant for proper installation. Most modern mountain bike wheels from the past five years are tubeless-ready, but older wheels may require rim strip conversion or may not be suitable for tubeless setup.

The XR3 sits between the XR2 and XR4 in our lineup. The XR2 features lower-profile knobs that roll faster on hardpack but provide less traction in loose conditions. The XR4 has even taller, more aggressive knobs for maximum grip in mud and loose terrain but feels slower on hardpack.

Choose the XR3 if you want versatile performance across varied trail conditions. It's our most popular mountain tire because it balances speed, traction, and durability for riders who encounter mixed terrain on every ride.

Each XR3 purchase includes one tire only — tubeless valves, rim tape, and sealant are sold separately. If you're new to tubeless, you'll need to purchase these items or a tubeless conversion kit to complete your setup.

The tire comes folded for shipping and includes installation instructions. You'll need tire levers, a floor pump or compressor, and tubeless sealant for installation. Most riders also find a tubeless valve core remover helpful for adding sealant through the valve.
